2016 Vesevo Ensis Taurasi
A classic, classy full-bodied red from southern Italy
There are some grape varieties that exude class. Aglianico is definitely one of them and is the signature grape of Taurasi, a speciality of Campania and Basilicata in the hinterland of Naples in Italy's deep south. It makes firm, savoury red wines with dark fruit and great structure. Aglianico's high tannins and acidity, and its ability to evolve with age, has inspired some to call it the 'Barolo of the South'. It is a very late ripening grape and even this far south has often been picked well into November. The Vesevo vineyards are located in the Irpinian hills of Campania, 50 km east of Naples, potentially one of Italy's most exciting wine-producing areas. It’s also home to Michelin-starred restaurants and the famous Bagnoli truffles.
This wine is a bright, deep ruby red in colour. On the nose, this is an intense, complex wine with aromas of red berry fruits and hints of vanilla. It is well structured and has firm but smooth tannins and a clean, dry finish.
