Fiano has been cultivated in southern Italy for over two thousand years and its best-known wine is Fiano di Avellino, which is produced in the Campania region, from vines grown on the volcanic hillsides of Avellino, east of Naples.  More recently, Fiano has been found to be a perfect variety for Australia. Having evolved for thousands of years to thrive in the hot and dry south of Italy, it naturally retains high acidity during intense heat spikes, can easily survive enduring periods of drought and it’s easy to pronounce!  The grape produces crisp, well-balanced wines with hints of honey and nuts.

This Fiano from the Heathcote wine region of Victoria is made by Journey Wines owner/winemaker and ex top Sydney sommelier, Damian North.   The 2017 is the first vintage and it is a great find.  A beautifully balanced wine with great mouthfeel derived from a portion of the fruit being barrel fermented. The combination of fresh, zingy acidity and gently waxy texture makes it perfect as an aperitif or with a meal.
