2022 Château Los Boldos Gran Reserva Carménère
A delicious ripe Carménère from the foothills of the Andes
Chile has 2,700 miles of Pacific Ocean coastline with the towering Andes to the east. The Cachapoal Valley slices across the country just south of the capital Santiago. Here the cool night air and stony soils promote complexity and freshness in the wines. Here in the Cachapoal Valley, Carménère is the home grape. It originated in Bordeaux but now grows almost only in Chile, the best in the Cachapoal Valley. The wine is treasured for its supple red-and-black berry flavours and herbaceous green pepper notes.
Château Los Boldos’s Gran Reserva wines are produced from a careful selection of plots in its Cachapoal vineyards, from vines aged over 10 years old. Grapes are harvested by hand and the wine is aged in French oak barrels for 10 months. The wine is deep red in colour, with violet hints. On the nose there are intense, fruity aromas of blackberries and ripe plum, as well as dark chocolate. The structure is round, with good acidity and a long, persistent finish.
