There is no wine variety more synonymous with Australia than Shiraz. It’s the nation’s greatest wine export and the most widely planted grape. Aussie Shiraz has, however, taken a fashion bashing from wine writers over recent years. The heavy, oaky, alcoholic blockbuster style so popular ten years or so ago has fallen out of favour. Australian winemakers have responded and are now producing a range of styles with more freshness and elegance whilst maintaining its inky depth and incredible richness.
The Winecroft featured red wine for September is an Australian Shiraz made by John Duval, one of the world’s best-known winemakers. He makes a small number of handcrafted wines at his home in the Barossa Valley in South Australia. Deep ruby in colour with a purple glint. It is full bodied, generous and has wonderful freshness.
The 2015 John Duval`Entity`Barossa Valley Shiraz is available on the Winecroft club winelist and the winelists of a number of great restaurants including Macus Wareing’s Marcus at the Berkeley (yet to open following lockdown).
