The west coast district of Swartland, 25 miles north of Cape Town, now ranks as the South Africa’s most exciting wine district. It is hot and dry here and its ancient geology has brought a mix of shale, sandstone and granite soils that are air-conditioned by the Atlantic Ocean nearby. Chenin Blanc and Shiraz grapes are at their best here grown on old, gnarly vines producing intense concentrated flavours.
The Winecroft featured white wine February is the 2020 Gabriëlskloof Elodie Chenin Blanc. The ‘Elodie’ is a rich and bold example of Swartland Chenin Blanc made at the beautiful Gabriëlskloof winery located near Bot River in the Overberg region east of Cape Town. It has concentrated flavours of citrus pith, dried pineapple and almonds. Full, waxy mouthful with great acidity and freshness.
This wine is on the wine list at the Michelin-starred Galvin La Chapelle in the City of London.
