2020 Pegaso `Granito` Cebreros Garnacha
A high quality delicious old-vine Garnacha from ‘the’ new wave Spanish wine region
Sierra de Gredos is a range of mountains west of Madrid. The region’s rugged landscape, with its granite-laced soils, has been home to numerous winemaking families for generations and boasts a wealth of old Garnacha vines. The vines had been forgotten in the most part but have been reawakened over the last few years by a new young crowd making their mark on the international wine scene. Here Pegaso was born from a collaboration between Rioja native Telmo Rodríguez, his long-time business partner Pablo Eguzkiza and two-time world rally champion Carlos Sainz Sr. They named the winery in tribute to Pegaso, a famous 1940s Spanish car manufacturer.
The Pegaso vineyards are farmed organically, surrounded by juniper, rosemary and lavender bushes at an elevation of 850-900 metres. The granitic soils result in wines with vibrant tannins. The Garnacha wines have a light, delicate, almost Burgundian finesse, developing notes of forest floor and mushrooms.
On the nose, this wine is beautifully aromatic, with wild berries, blueberries, as well as slightly more floral and herbal notes. The palate is tasty with fine-grained tannins balanced by raspberry notes, hints of white pepper and a distinct granite character.
