2020 Petra Hebo Toscana
A delicious Super Tuscan red from an innovative, non-invasive producer in southern Tuscany
Hebo was the name of an ancient Etruscan settlement in Suvereto, in the Maremma region on the beautiful southern coast of Tuscany. Here the Moretti family use organic farming and sustainable production practices to produce Petra wines.
Hebo is a great example of a Super Tuscan red wine. Back in the 1960s, some Tuscan producers began experimenting with non-indigenous varieties from Bordeaux, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot and using blends not allowed under Tuscan appellation law. These were bottled as lowly Vino da Tavola wines but punched well above their status and so they collectively became known as Super Tuscans. The term became synonymous with adventurous winemaking, with producers experimenting with French barriques and new viticultural methods.
Petra "Hebo Toscana IGT" is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot and a little Sangiovese to retain the regional character, reflecting the rich soil in which it is grown in Maremma. It is bright ruby red in colour. On the nose, there are fresh aromas of black cherry, violet and blueberries which are complemented by hints of vanilla and exotic spice. On the palate, it is fresh and savoury. It is a pleasure to drink.
