2022 Domaine de L’Enclos Chablis
A modern zesty Chablis from a star producer
Chablis is the northernmost region in Burgundy and it is renowned world-wide for producing high quality dry white wine made from 100% Chardonnay grapes. Its northern location gives it a cooler climate than other Burgundy regions and the resultant wines have higher acidity than Chardonnay produced in warmer climes. They are typically unoaked. The French describe the appeal of Chablis as its goût de pierre à fusil, or gunflint quality. The steely acidity, nervy, fresh, energetic style of Chardonnay is unique.
Domaine de L'Enclos is one of the most exciting domaines to emerge from Chablis in the past decade. The estate is owned by Romain and Damien Bouchard, whose family have been working in Chablis for generations. In 2015, they sold their father’s négociant business but retained the 39 hectares of vineyard previously owned by their mother’s family. In addition, they bought a house in the heart of the town, called ‘L’Enclos’, which was originally a building used by the monks of Pontigny to house their vineyard workers. The brothers have transformed this old house into a modern Chablis winery and have put a great emphasis on working their vineyards organically and sustainably.
The Domaine de L’Enclos village Chablis is unoaked. It is pale gold in colour, it boasts bright citrus and green fruit on the nose while the palate is very well balanced, with steely acidity and a zesty creaminess on the palate.
