2016 Globo Vultur Petit Verdot
A multi-award winning Petit Verdot from sun-drenched central Chile
Inspired by the peaceful and perpetual flight of the Andean Condor (Vultur Gryphus), Vultur is a multi-award winning family winery that makes premium, characterful wines on a human scale, with minimum intervention and faithful to their origin in the Colchagua Valley of central Chile. Here, sandwiched between the Andes Mountains and the Coastal Mountain Range, the valley’s arid Mediterranean climate enables red wine grapes to ripen slower with little intervention. Bordeaux grape varietals are the stars here and although Petit Verdot is used a little to boost colour, tannins, and alcohol in the blended red wines of Bordeaux, here it can be the main event since cool sea influence keeps the acidity fresh in the grapes providing wonderful balance to the wine.
Comprising of 90% Petit Verdot with a small 10% of Carignan, the wine is handmade in small batches. The majority of the wine undergoes 30 days of maceration and is aged in French oak barrels for 14 months. Both varietal wines are blended together prior to being bottled, unfiltered. The resultant wine is beautifully textured with smooth tannins. The mouth-feel is full and weighty. The elegance of the Petit Verdot combines perfectly with the liveliness and freshness of the Carignan. The nose is slightly spicy, offering notes of raspberries from the Carignan with the wonderful plum, lilac, violet and sage flavours coming through from the Petit Verdot.
