Mont Ventoux is probably better known to Tour de France fans than wine drinkers but this mountainous area of Provence in the south of France, just 30km to the east of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, produces fantastic wines in the style of the Rhône but with a distinctive freshness and at slightly cheaper prices.
Sébastien Vincenti’s Domaine de Fondrèche is widely recognised as one of the very best producers in the Ventoux appellation.
His 38 hectares are worked in a very natural way, the aim being to create perfect harmony between vine, soil and environment. No chemical herbicides are used. Any treatments are 100% natural. All stages of vineyard and cellar work are determined by the lunar calendar.
The 2017 Ventoux Persia, a blend of 90% Syrah with the balance Mourvèdre, is rich yet elegant with plenty of kirsch and blackberry fruits, herbs and smoke. It’s medium to full-bodied, has sweet tannins, and is loaded with Provençal character.
Provençal stews, beef, lamb, game, mixed grills.
