2022 Spice Route`Chakalaka` Swartland Shiraz
A rich, spicy Swartland red
From dry-farmed vineyards across the Swartland, Chakalaka is Spice Route's signature wine. It is a blend of six different grape varieties, Grenache, Carignan, Durif, Mourvèdre, Shiraz and Tannat, selected for their suitability to the Swartland’s dry growing conditions. It opens with dark berry fruit, warm spice and hints of violets. The palate is concentrated yet balanced, showing blackberry, plum, smoked pepper and subtle clove, framed by supple tannins and a gently savoury finish.
Chakalaka, a Zulu word that implies togetherness, refers to a South African blend of spices, used to add flavour to local dishes. This wine is inspired by the unique combination of flavours.
The Swartland, north of Cape Town, is one of South Africa’s most dynamic wine regions—its mix of decomposed granite, shale and iron-rich soils, combined with low rainfall and persistent coastal winds, creates naturally low yields and striking flavour intensity. Spice Route was one of the early pioneers here, with Charles Back recognising the region’s potential long before its modern renaissance. Working with old bush vines and minimal irrigation, the team focuses on bold, site-driven reds that reflect the area’s rugged landscape and growing reputation for high-quality, characterful wines. ‘Chakalaka’ is a clear expression of that ethos—vibrant, structured and unmistakably Swartland.
